Friday, 28 September 2018 at 5:45 PM to Sunday, 30 September 2018 at 8:00 PM
Organiser: Ben Carpenter
*IMPORTANT: If you signed up to this trip before Tuesday this week check your email inbox*
Plan:
This is a snowcraft course for those who want to learn how to navigate on snow, how to use crampons, ice axes and how not to fall off big pointy white things in winter. We will be based out of Mangatapopo hut below Tongariro and Ngauruhoe.
No prior alpine experience is required, though if you have already joined us for the first snowcraft course or have experience – we will be splitting the groups by experience so this will be an opportunity to learn some more skills.
Gear:
The club can provide crampons, ice axes and helmets.
You must have boots that are stiff enough to take a crampon, this means the boot will barely bend if you apply force to it. If you unsure about yours, bring your boots to the Tuesday meetings and get someone to check them.
Basic, Overnight and Alpine Gear as per the app are required. http://new.vuwtc.
Meet at the hunter carpark at 5.45, we'll do quick gear check before we head off.
Please let us know if you can bring a car!
On Friday we will dirve to the Mangatepopo road end, and walk to Mangatepopo hut so bring a head torch. - The hut is first in; first served for beds with the rest of the public, so make sure you have a bedroll with you
On Saturday and Sunday we will be out and about learning all things snowcraft and climbing mountains, weather dependent.
We will return to Wellington Sunday night.
Cost:
$55, allowing 40 for gas, and 15 for food. You will need to buy your own hut pass for the weekend, 2x Serviced hut pass ($30) which you can get from the DoC office on Manners Street. If you have a season hut pass it will be free for you!
Fitness:
We wont be constantly rushing all over the place, but be prepared to climb at least one mountain.
Food:
Group breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday, and dinner on Saturday. Bring your own lunch and snacks for the two days.
REITIRATION OF IMPORTANT STUFF!
