Kawakawa Bay, situated at Lake Taupo offers beautiful climbing. From simple sport to trad to multi-pitching to crazy exposed climbing, there is something for everyone there. Here is a link to the climbing guideĀ for that region. It is a bit of a mission to get there, so it will be an intense weekend with lots of climbing but not necessarily that much sleeping.
The plan is to drive up there on Friday afternoon and walk in with minimum luggage. On Saturday the luggage is shipped in early by boat, so we can get climbing at a reasonable hour and all day long. Sunday late afternoon we will be walking out while the luggage is shipped out again.
The prerequisites for this weekend are that you have some previous experience in climbing. This means you should be able to comfortably climb about a 15 on top-rope. We will have people who can teach you
- Lead climbing/belaying
- Multi-pitching
In terms of equipment you need general Camping gear from our gear list (http://new.vuwtc.org.nz/gear-list) plus your personal climbing gear (especially the shoes, since most of the rest can be borrowed from the club).
