That's the thing about trampers: undoubtedly we all love to be outside in the pristine green of nature; nothing surpasses it for healing; felt in the blood and felt along the heart, the whisperings of the wilderness, the soft crooning of old Earth--oh, the very thought draws it out of you!
And from that love we become aware of the issue. Nature is at once resilient and fragile, at once indifferent and desperate. There is work to be done. In the face of decay, we ask ourselves: what good can we do for these things? What is a single person able to do? Then we remember that no man is an island; and how totally apt would it be to celebrate that truth with friends, doing work, on an island?
Therefore VUWTC is delighted to announce a volunteering weekend helping out DOC on Matiu/Somes Island. That is the scientific and historic reserve in the middle of the harbour. It is a jewel of a place, and in my opinion the furthest away you can get from the city without going very far at all.
The plan is ferry a group over on Saturday morning and spend the day assisting with island maintenance work, under the supervision of the rangers there. We have the whole campsite booked for ourselves, and can spend the evening sharing stories, keeping cosy, and looking for penguins in the dark. We'll head back Sunday morning.
Cost of the trip includes the ferry fares, camp fees and food for dinner and breakfast (?). We will be camping on the island, so bring your own tents. Otherwise the club has flies to use.
