Rockcraft: The first outdoor Climbing training trip!
We will be heading to our local stomping crag (Pukerua Bay) where practice your belay and climbing skills outdoors! We will teach you how to stay safe while climbing outside, how to safely belay someone else. If you've never climbed before this is the perfect introductory trip!
We are running a Hangdog sesh this Wednesday for you all to have an opportunity to belay in a controled enviroment. If you know everything there is to know about climbing, this is the perfect trip to get to know some other keen climbers at VUW!
We're going to get there by carpooling so bring your cars please! If we don't have enough cars for climbers, we will be organise groups to the train station and we will meet you in Pukarua Bay. (I'll be sending out emails on friday with information about groups and transport.)
Our climbing leaders are:
Béatrice / Xanthe / Rowan / Patrick / Willa / Jess
Here's the Sunday Plan:
- Meet at Hunter Carpark at 9:00am, hopefully leaving by 9:30. Allowing time for everyone to arrive and sort out transport; If there aren't enough cars we will be running the a group down to the trainline from CBD station to Pukarua Bay (I will be sending an email out on saturday with the car groups and basic information; this is where those without a car spot will be taking the train, so bring your cars if you can!)
- Arrive at the bay and walk to the crag. Enjoy the day filled with climbing and fun!
- Returning to Wellington CBD // Hunter Carpark around 4/5pm (Or earlier if a discussed with your driver).
We will sort out gear to supply you with on location, but if you have your own equiptment (Harness/Shoes/etc.) feel free to bring it along!
What you'll need to bring:
- Water
- Lunch // Snacks
- Sneakers: Active shoes will do the job nicely, The gear shed has limited climbing shoes so they will disappear fast (Will be distributed on the day).
- Active wear: Clothing you can comfortably move around in//boulder in.
- Extra layers incase the wind picks up, coastal breezes ya' know?
The $5 cost goes towards the driver's petrol, so if you're one of the amazing individuals driving us out there, don't worry you will get reimbursed!
If you have any questions, flick me an email at advenngritt@gmail.com, or chat with me after the Tuesday club meeting.

Belmont Ridge Day Walk
Date: Saturday 4 May, with Sunday 5 May as a backup if weather is bad.
Location: Belmont Regional Park, right on our doorstep!
Time: 4-6 hours
Difficulty: Easy (two climb sections but otherwise mostly flat on easy trail)
Bring: The usual daytrip stuff: lunch, snacks, water, good vibes. A rainproof and a windproof layer is a MUST, the winds are very strong on the ridgeline. A secured hat and sunscreen is also strongly recommended for the ridge.
We have Sunday as a backup day if the weather is bad, since the ridgeline is exposed and not suitable in poor weather. I'll advise closer to the day.
Track: We meet at Petone Train Station at 9am. There's a lot of public transport options to get there, and parking is available roadside on Pito-One Rd if you need it. We start along the Korokoro Stream Track, and climb up into the Western Hills to Cannon's Head. From the ridge, we have beautiful views in every direction of the Wellington region. We finish by following the ridgeline to the Belmont Trig, posing for a quick photo before we get blown away by the wind, and completing the loop back to Petone Train Station. If we're not sick of each other by then, we can optionally grab a bite to eat on Jackson Street afterwards

We're doing a collab trip with the VUWSC!
(Victoria university of Wellington science club).
This will be an easy day of plant & bird identification in the Otari Wiltons Bush area, with a little side trip up to the Skyline walkway as a bonus too if we want.
We will also likely have someone from Otari Wiltons Bush joining us as a guide! (though this is yet to be confirmed).
We will arrive at Otari Wiltons Bush around mid-day, then spend around 2-3 hours wandering and exploring and a very easy pace.
Snacks will be provided by the club too!
Also we might be doing our own custom bush-themed game of bingo! (like spotting animals and plants)
More info coming soon as we finalize things.
Sign-ups will open closer to the date.

On this week's instalment of Weeknight Walkies, we'll be travelling to the Hutt. This part of Wellington is not always covered by VUWTC, so I'm keen to explore it a little more.
The plan is to meet at 5:15pm at Wellington Train Station, we'll then catch the 5:37pm Melling train to Melling Station (with the 6:07pm + many 83 buses to Queensgate as a backup). We'll then follow the Hutt River, stopping by some playgrounds, Gear Island, Junglerama, and other hip spots.
We'll then arrive at the mouth of the river and head down the Petone Foreshore, including stops at the full-size scaled model railway, centrepiece playground, and the derelict Petone Wharf (perfect for climbing!!!) We might even make a cheeky 5min side trip to the Hutt famous "Petone artesian water fountain - Te Puna Wai Ora," it's got great tasting natural water (and it's free)!
We'll wash up at Petone Train Station, with constant Hutt Valley trains throughout the evening. Maybe stop for a bite to eat at the nearby Macca's?

It's time to bag all the huts in the Tararuas!
The goal of this event is to run a ton of simultaneous trips all in one go, with the goal of visiting every single official hut in the Tararuas in one go.
These trips range in difficulty from easy overnighters, all the way to 4-day missions along the main range.
We are running this event over 4 days between Thursday (ANZAC day) through to Sunday.
You can join one of the full 4 day options, or just a weekend trip depending on what suits you!
For this to happen, we need a ton of people, and lots of cars!
Here is a taste of a few of the beautiful huts you can visit:
More information will be added soon, especially once we've got some sign-ups and can start organizing people into groups and planning out different routes.
There will be route options available for all ranges of difficulty, like easy trips for complete beginners, all the way to advanced bush-bashes over the full 4 days.
So sign up and come and explore our local mountain range!
Some of the available routes:
Dundas loop
4 days - Medium
Classic loop of the main northern Tararua huts. This track has been recently cleared so it's nicer than it used to be, but still requires lots of steep climbs
Roaring Stag -> Cattle Ridge -> Dundas -> Herepai

A famous Tararua route, visiting several main-range huts spread out over 4 days. Lots of steep ascents & descents, so decent fitness required
